In the summer of 1913, the tenor Giovanni Zenatello and theatrical impresario Ottone Rovato took the financial risk of promoting a grand opera festival in the Arena to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi. With the staging of Aida, the Arena di Verona became the largest open-air opera theater in the world record that still holds.
